The state flag of south Carolina was designed features the sabal palmetto and a crecent moon on a blue background. Crecents were a component of a banner carried by South Carolina protesters of the Stamp Act in 1776. Sabal paletto is the state tree and is also seen on the state seal and state quarter (South Carolina's nickname is "The Palmetto State").
