Southern Appalachian brook trout

North Carolina designated the southern Appalachian brook trout as the official freshwater trout in 2005. Sometimes called "specks" because of their unique spotted appearance, the southern Appalachian brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is a genetically distinct species and North Carolina's only native freshwater trout..

Brook trout live under water conditions that are cool, clean and pure and are a favorite of sport fishermen in the cold mountain streams of Western North Carolina.
