Deborah Samson Gannett fought in the American Revolution as Robert Shurtleff. Before she was wounded in battle (and her masquerade was discovered) she was recognized for outstanding service. Massachusetts observes each May 23 as an anniversary commemorating her enlistment in the Continental Army.
