Washington designated bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum) as the official state grass in 1989. Found in eastern Washington, bluebunch wheatgrass was a benefit to Washington's pioneer farmers and continues to play a major role in the state's agriculture industry.
Although many state symbols are readily identifiable with the western part of the state, bluebunch wheatgrass is a state symbol that is unique to eastern Washington.
